Khocali Genocide

Khocali Genocide in Azerbaijan and Armenian Genocide Policy againist Azerbaijanians

Genocide is defined as “the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group”. As we understand, genoside is a planned event by some groups againist another group. In addition International Criminal Court  defines genocide: ‘’…any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group; that’s very naughty
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.’’

These terms proves that genocide is the event that may be the most terrible event in the history of the nations. But unfortunately some nations had to experince these events. Azerbaijan is one them that experinced genocide in 1992. This is one of the worst tragedies in nations history. This is Khocali Genocide.

During the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijanis became victims of pogroms and ethnic cleansing, which resulted in numerous casualties and displacement of large groups of people. In October 1991, the Nagorno Karabakh forces cut the road connecting Khojaly and Aghdam, so that the only way to reach the town was by a helicopter. The town was defended by local Azerbaijani forces , which numbered about 160 or so lightly armed men. Prior to the attack, the town had been without electricity and gas for several months. In the abstract, Khocali was already isolated due to ethnic cleansing of the Azerbaijani population of its neighboring regions. In February 26,1992 the joint forces occupied the town which has been reduced to rubbishes by heavy artillery shelling. Under the extreme conditions, those that survived the siege moved into the darkness of night to be met at the middle of the route by an ambush of Armenian forces. Several thousand fleeing civilians were ambushed at several points and shelled by showers of bullets while they were trying to find refuge in the nearby forests and mountains terrain. However, advances from punitive teams of Armanian occupation forces were relentless. After eliminating a handful of policemen who were accompanying the refugees’ column, the Armenian forces reached out to unprotected civilians to slaughter women,children and elders, mutilating bodies and scalping heads of those killed as the notorius Karabakh trophies.

In a few hours of night from February 25th into to the morning of the 26th 613 civilians, including 106 women and 83 children, were killed.

With outrageous brutiality, 8 families were totally exterminated;25 children lost both parents while 130 cildren lost at least one parent, 1275 peace residents were taken hostages. This genocide was the most brutal punishment of civilians during the whole 3 year of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict’s military phase.

Operation was planned and undertaken by Armenian occupation forces in Nagorno Karabakh region claiming themselves as Nagorno Karabakh Republic. All of perpetrators of Khojaly Genocide are still at large and haven’t been accounted for this crime againist humanity.

The Parlamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) recognized this event as Khojali Massacre. On February 25,2010 the Massachusetts House of Representatives officially offered its sincerest acknowledgement of the 18th Commemoration of Khojali Massacre.

Armenian occupation army realized all of the five terms of the definion of Genocide accepted in the International Criminal Court. This genocide is againist humanity, and democracy. Armenians were left United Nations Security Council Resolutions (822, 853, 874, and 884) calling upon Armenians for “the withdrawal of occupying forces from occupied areas of the Azerbaijani Republic” unanswered. Today Armenians are keeping occupied 20% of Azerbaijan official native lands that recognized by United Nations. We want to retrieve its native lands by peace while Armenian side is not the supporter of the solution of this conflict. Azerbaijan is calling all the world nations to criticize this unjustice. We want Justice for Khojaly !
